We got stuck inside on our third day in Boston. Our first Nor'easter experience. We went shopping early in the morning before it started snowing heavily, as we still needed a few winter clothing items - we have heard Finland is outrageously expensive when it comes to clothing. But after that, we went back to the hotel and laid low for the day. It was actually a productive day - we did several loads of laundry so we'd arrive with everything fresh and clean, we made sure our suitcases were packed - removing last items we thought we could live without, we caught up on sleep, and we watched the snow. Throughout the day it didn't snow much but it was windy, the bulk of the snow was scheduled to really hit hard at 10 pm.
Around 8, we left the hotel and braved the storm, heading across the street on foot to get some dinner. I had just finished The Year of Living Danishly by Helen Russell and commented to Adam that although we weren't going to be in Denmark, I had read she had an issue buying Vitamin D there because it sold out so quickly. We figured it wouldn't hurt to bring our own and walked to the Target nearby to pick it up. G loved the swirling snow, but it was COLD and WINDY!
Check out the pile of snow in the background - it was about 15-20' tall and about 40-50' long! It was just the snow from the parking lot. Boston seemed to have things running smoothly (according to the news there were over 2,000 pieces of equipment out and about all day keeping roads clear and salted) as the snow machine was constantly running in our area.
After getting our sunshine vitamins, we headed back "home" and got to sleep early, our tummies full of butterflies with the thought of our flight the next evening being canceled due to the weather...
Luckily, when we awoke the next day, the snow was no longer falling and it was sunny, but cold! Flight showing ON TIME online for an 8:40 PM departure, we loaded the car and checked out of the hotel.
Since we didn't get to see much of Boston proper on our visit, we decided to headed into town to catch a few gems we knew we had to check off the list.
Adam's favorite TV show was Cheers, so we parked at Beacon Hill and walked up to the infamous bar. It seemed like everyone in town was in the Public Garden sledding with all the fresh snow. At first it was a little odd seeing parents and their kids walking around downtown Boston with snow suits and sleds in hand, but once we realized what they were doing, it all made sense.
We headed to Lexington and Concord from there to learn a little history dating back to the Revolutionary War. They were both about 30-45 minutes away. The towns were adorable. We got to see Sleepy Hollow Cemetery - where many famous authors are buried (Thoreau, Alcott, Emerson, etc.), Walden Pond, cute buildings from the 1700s, and very scenic landscapes. We couldn't leave the northeast without a lobster roll so we ate lunch at a place that had some pretty good choices. Adam had a warm butter lobster roll sans bread, I had a lobster omelet, and G refused to try any lobster. I'm not a fan of lobster, but the omelet was pretty good. Adam enjoyed his.
We then headed to the airport to make our way overseas!

Tune in next week to see just how long it ended up taking us to get to Finland...It was a comedy of errors, and we will never fly Norwegian Airlines again if we can help it!
